Day 27: Ushuaia – El Calafate (Patagonia, Argentina)

Monday, January 22nd, 2018

Last day on the Ventus Australis:

We leave the ship quickly after breakfast to catch our flight with Aerolineas Argentinas to El Calafate at 11:05 from Ushuaia Airport. There is no bus from the ship, so we pack our backbags to carry them to the taxi booth in front of the Quay. There we take a taxi to the airport (15 min). Taxi in Ushuaia is supercheap, we pay 80 AR$ (like 3,.. eur) and go to checkin. They seem to have technical troubles with their checkin system, but the girls are very interested in my cell phone model.

No lounge on the Ushuaia international airport. Nothing. Like Sahel zone. But around the corner a coffee with an espresso machine and relativly fast internet connection. Flight is fully booked, we get only split up aisle seats. At least they know sky priority and we enter the plane first. Brand new Boeing, stewardesses with glitter around the eyes, no coffee, no cookie, no water. 11:05 take of, 12:30 landing in El Calafate.

FLIGHT 5: Aerolineas Argentinas AR1873 from Ushuaia (USH) 11:05 to El Calafate (FTE) 12:25 duration: 01h20, 500 Delta skymiles

A guy picks us and some other people up at the airport and brings us to our hostel in El Calafate: Hostel del Glacier Libertador, from now on: backpacker style. Room has the window to the inside of the hostel, is unexpected large and clean. Toilet and shower ensuite. Breakfast included.

Then we walk to the city center to get money, buy cereals and a lunch package for tomorrow. Lady at reception of Hostel del Glacier Libertador is very friendly and helpful. The city of El Calafate seems to be bigger than Ushuaia, but is also one main street which grew to the left and right. The recommeded Bakery Don Luis is fantastic, super fast internet to write and upload my blog.

Then we stop by at Wolly Burgers. Finally a burger. Not famous.

Sun comes out so we decide to run the El Calafate Nature reserve and ashore Laguna Argentina.

At dinner we surprisingly pump into our Indian boat friends and have a beer together …
