At 7:00 am, after a basic breakfast we leave our Hostal del Glacier in El Calafate.

We get picked up by a Mercedes Benz monster to go up north to El Chalten, a town which exists just for the backpackers and treckers to Fitz Roy and surroundings. The drive is more or less 4 hours, we stop for photos quite often. But the landscape is fantastic, endless patagonian step. And we see some huge condors flying.

Driving ruta 40 we stop by at lake viedma where butch cassody and sundance kid hid.

I can already see the Fitz Roy:

We arrive in El Chaltén at 11:00 am and get dropped of in front of our hostel. We stay in Hostel Rancho Grande. The receptionist at the lobby is super friendly and helpful. He gives us a map of El Chalten hiking trails and tells us to leave our stuff in a locker room and hike up to Lago del los Tres immediately. There is clear sky and sunshine, the last weeks there was no day like this. You never know weather in patagonia, take your chances. Our room would not be ready anyway.

So we do. We do a fast repack do daypacks and get ready to hike. On the map its 13 km 5 hrs one way. The trail starts 200 meters from the Hostel.

We hike up a nice valley like 11 kms, then it is going up.

In the evening we earned argentinian food.
